When do we need trash chute in a residential building? Let find out.
Lets think of possible reason for trash chute requirement. I can think of following parameters.
- Number of story’s
- Number of dwelling units (to cover 1-3 family homes and small developments)
- Number of dwelling units per floor.
- (I missed the Occupancy)
- (I should also think of exceptions)
What is the possible location to find the requirement? I think it should be in Chapter 12-Interior Environment, section 1213.
Fact finding
So its can be found in section 1213.3 Refuse Chute. The section outlines the requirement of trash chute for 9 or more dwelling units and in 5 or more story building. A space of 5 SF is required for recyclables on each floor.
In I-1 and R-1 occupancy the trash chute room shall be restricted for use of authorized person only and a separate room shall be provided for occupant’s use.
Exceptions:
- If there is no elevator the storage space for recyclables is not required.
- If the building has separate chutes for recyclables, the storage space is not required
- Not needed in transient hotel if a) house keeping collects waste. b) Compactor room and refuse storage room is provided. c) In Group-I buildings.
Compactor room
Since we are covering refuse lets take is further to compactor room. It is required in Group I-1 or R-2 with four or more story and 12 or more dwellings units. Its needed in R-1 in any case.
Please note the trash chute and compactor rooms has specific fire rating requirement.
